It’s a debate we have been having for a little while, as we often see better SEO results from newer, fresher, simpler and less complicated websites than those are starting to get a little bit outdated.
So we decided to see whether we could find anyone else who would back us up on the theory that high-quality website design leads to better and quicker SEO results.

Google says Design of a site should be user friendly. They call it user experience factor :)

In theory, the better a site looks, more people will like it and link to it, therefor more backlinks

Both the design and structure of a site should help SEO to some degree. Poorly structured sites might not be efficiently crawled and Google is getting better at detecting sites with poor UI such as those jammed full of advertising banners.

I think the answer is somewhere in between. True that if the site is really catchy - like a flash based site, people will like it and most probably revisit it. But very often sites like that load slower, and if people can't get to the content in max 2-3 seconds, they would simply close it - thus the bounce

NO. Design don't affect SEO, but if you put your content above the fold, it may improve your ranking in google.

Well, it does help your sales, that's for sure. :) However, usability must be on the first place, then comes design. But you have to balance it out, as crappy usable website is not something to aim at...

Oh, BTW, it does not affect SEO, BUT, you can make it easier for google bot to crawl your page if you do not exaggerate on design, and make it simple but good looking.

Yes of course. As well as the actual layout of the page, bad code is also a factor in SEO. Any website with bad code, irrelevant code or simply code which is not needed can confuse a search spider.

Yes and no... the design helps with visually enticing a user to stay on a website for a longer period of time, but the design is useless if your website has bad quality content. The design can allow people to stay on your site longer and your traffic rank will improve. Your main focus should be on making sure your site is coded well and has good content and keywords. Craigslist has a simple design and yet it has high ranking traffic. The design can be cool but it should be seen only as a supplement for SEO.

Not at all. SEO have a little connection with your design. 1. SEO needs simple design 2. SEO needs fast pageload time 3. SEO needs less javascripts 4. SEO need alid XHTML and CSS.

The quality website design that is seo-friendly website design can contribute to later seo work for a website. The website design and website marketing including seo are, to some extent, impartible.

Yes it does. a Well-designed website is loading fast, has cute layout and people don't get confuse navigate the site. these 3 criteria are included in the way how Google calculates SEO score of a certain website. Beyond SEO perspective, a design of a website influence the reputations of your product and also a webmaster who manages the site everyday
