I suggest you chart your objectives and requirements first, then choose a shopping cart software that would suit your needs best. Every software might not be able to help you to its best ability. I think you should analyze your expected results, and then choose the software appropriate to that. Good Luck!

Alveus Shopping Cart is ready to use when you upload it, if your inventory grows big you can export to mysql.
It can work in two modes: "Downloadable Products" and "Products to Ship"
It supports Order and Inventory Management. Price: only USD $30

I would also consider CS Cart, very complete even without customization and addons. Definitely my choice for big ecommerce websites.

As free solution Open Cart is hard to beat, simple to use, intuitive, easy to customize.

there are basically many many carts out there in the market that u can choose from. it is your sole decision as to what kind of requirements would better suit your demand and choose the cart. practically in the market magento is the leading one with a lot of users but i could suggest u one shopping cart that is very very flexible and scalable as well
try the nichesuite cart design for your business. it is purely develpoed under offfbiz java and is so very flexible . the ui and the gui are very good. purely application based. one of my good friend has asked for the demo of this thing and he has liked it a lot .

    try it
    all the best

The problem I'm facing with free shopping carts is the horrendously inflexible shipping management. For example, one of my sites sells wood for woodworkers and woodturners, so my products vary in size and weight over a vast range. Open Cart cannot manage this even with the numerous extensions available. I've narrowed down my paid shopping cart options to Advanced cart and Click Cart Pro. Actually that's why I logged in to ask if anyone is using them, but saw this thread first and thought I would share my epxrience thus far with Open Cart, Presta Cart, and Zen. None of them have built-in item-by-item shipping option tools that are easy for the admin to use and easy for the buyer to use. At least not that I could see. I do like OC very much but the terrible shipping management was the deal killer.

Magento does everything for you, while Opencart or Prestashop help you do what you want.
If you a fan of Joomla, try Virtuemart, a Joompla plugin.
If you a fan of Wordpress, try Jigoshop, WP e-Commerce, plugins for WP.
If you a fan of Drupal, try Drupal Commerce....

osCommerce and Zen cart are on their ways out, I would never recommend that you use them.
