Are .edu and .gov Backlinks Really Effective?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by wes888, Jul 28, 2011.

I read many people talking about .edu and .goc backlinks. Are these type of backlinks really that effective in increasing one's ranking? Where can one find these type of backlinks? Are there tools to help locate these type of sites or do I have to search manually?

They were much more effective then other types of links, but now it's not true. search engines don't give an special advantage to this type of links. People saying that edu and gov links are more effective - usually selling these types of links.

I agree with Lincherry, I have read numerous articles lately saying that edu and gov links aren't as effective as they used to be.

Usually edu or those that pertain to university site and gov or those that pertain to government sites were exclusively used by such respectively thus you can expect high Page Rank from them however nowadays marketers were able to get hold of edu and gov domains that were turned to valueless domains thus if your edu and gov backlinks are not relevant nor does it have quality then it is valueless to your website.

    yep thats right.

Try to mix GOV link with some bookmarking, some web 2.0 and some forum profile.

    Its a good mix.

Personnally, I've seen some good boost with web 2.0

those types of tlds are special in the eyes of search engines, but still these links alone won't help you further in getting your keywords on top of SERPs. As they've mentioned earlier, you need variations of links to strengthen your site

I would say they are in general more effective than, say, .info. but any statement on this is prone to be a rough estimate at best, since I doubt anyone has ever done a clean split-test between getting .gov. edu links ONLY as opposed to getting .com .net .org .anything.

The thing is ,it is not that .gov or edu sites are not effective in back-linking but having varieties of links will help a lot.

Backlinks from .edu and .gov domains are only "more" useful than other sites, since they're generally have a higher PR than other sites. But there are some .edu and .gov sites with low PR, and backlinks from these wouldn't be worth more than any other site with the same PR.

.edu and .gov backlinks can really give your site's ranking a boost. Search engines regard .edu and .gov sites as authority sites so it's plus points to your site if your site has a link on these sites. There are tools that can help you look for authority sites on niche, like the one we have on our site.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

There are around 25,270,000,000 .com, 4,100,000,000 .org, 7,570,000,000 .net domains indexed by Google compared to only 323,000,000 .edu domains. And there is a high number of authority domains among these 323,000,000 .EDU domains and that number is ever larger than total authority sites of .com, .org and .net altogether.

That's why in general there is a conception that '.edu backlink is synonymous to authority', which is not a false statement either.

Google is not stupid. If you paid 20 .edu or .gov links and you have low quality site and you don't have diversity you can not expect any kind of boost. Diversity is key for success.

These links are even more effective because Google trusts them because they are related to education
