    by text maps, i meant the sitemap.xml comes up as tabular form on page. In xml it comes as xml.​

    I would politely disagree. Your website should have both an xml sitemap and a helpful text sitemap that visitors to your site can read.

    As other members as said, for me too the sitemap generator I tend to use on wordpress seems to be Google XML Sitemaps. However for a non wordpress website, I have used the site advised by Jim4767 wich is xml-sitemaps.com.

    I am here to talk about benefits of " manual " sitemap, but doesn't mean that I am against a sitemaps generated by other resources like other members adviced.
    Free tools may leave some errors and can cause negative impact on website performance.

    Free tools may cause following errors
    • same update date for all links.
    • can include invalid and bad urls in sitemap.
    • same and equal priority for all URL's.
    • can include cloaking and canonical URL's in sitemaps.
    • can cause validation error in sitemaps, must be check after loading to site. Validation of sitemap can be easily done by google webmaster tool. (go to Google webmaster tool --> optimization --> sitemap ---> validate sitemap -- > click validate sitemap --> done).
