I have a wordpress based website, I would like to add the "membership" type option to my page so that the website could have members, premium members (paid) etc... Is it mandatory for me to use a CMS for this? What is the solution to having something like this up and running?

You probably need a plugin. Wordpress is already your CMS.

There are a lot of advantages to using a CMS like WordPress - you get to use many popular membership plugins and other plugins that will allow you to do stuff that you would otherwise have to custom code.

WordPress is by far the most popular cms, and it has thousands of really cool plugins that you can use to literally launch a membership site in days and monetize your existing and future content.
