I'm trying to create my own automatically updating news aggregate site (in the spirit of the drudge report) with an online news magazine appearance. Basically, I want it to be just a bunch of links to news items but with a somewhat huffington post look. I'm using google news rss feeds and rssinclude.com for most of the feed boxes. But my css is not the best and the feed boxes move down in smaller browser windows. Does anyone have any tips on how I can make this work better and pull this off? Basically, any advice you can share that you think will improve what I'm trying to do. Here is a link to my site. The thing is, I know of a video distribution company that pays you to host their news video content and that means, if I can get this to work and make it presentable, I will have an automatically updating news script people will be able to monetize and make money from. i'd be willing to share this script with anyone who can help me improve it... Thanks... P.S. Also it would be helpful I think if you can let me know how the site looks in your browser.
You were absolutely right. Thanks! I fixed the "breaking news" box and scaled back the black title backgrounds and changed the black borders from 2px to 1px and it's completely changed the tone of the site. Oddly, it loads slower now. not sure why but it now looks somewhat like a legitimate news site. It looks basic but as I find more rss sources, I will splice in different feeds. Now I only have to worry about the news boxes shifting in different browser window sizes.
I think the you have to reset the display on your site. This is so we are much easier to use and gives the impression of a professional website. And than you must make the COOLIRIS i center position. This is just my input. please be advised.
Hi everyone. I changed the url of the site because I bought a new script I am trying out but I am still working on the one mentioned in this thread. So if anyone still wants to critique my page, I moved it temporaily to here. Check it out and let me know your thoughts. it's getting better by the day but I still have to tackle that box display issue in different browser sizes and resolutions. You can see what I mean by zooming in while viewing my page. The boxes to the right will move down below the boxes to the left. I am wondering if there's any way to fix that. I'm not sure there is because everyone's browser's zoom level is set differently. Seems almost impossible to fix.
The content seems to be in the middle meanwhile also have the colour combination some what to good extent. More over the back ground seems to very hard looking make it more attractive t make you page look better.
Nice concept and good design. But I think that the amount of data per content view is a little bit much. You could limit this using category links or some other similar technique
Hi Mike323, Congrats for the new website. It seems that you have a great knowledge in Web Development. Can you or anyone please tell me how to redirect to another page after the mp4 video finish playing?
Hi moinchoudhari , I removed the video player in favor of a youtube rss video ticker. I'm not sure how to automatically redirect after the video finishes.
Try to make Website Design look and feel, indulge background with some dark backgrounds and with color contrast of fonts..
You need to change something in background and your website is taking time in loading please check that as well!! Good Work Best Wishes!!
Good Website - I liked the information there, However it loads slowly, please check on the speed of the loading of your site
Painfully slow loading, and not all of that being the fault of it being a RSS pull. You've got 870k of markup to deliver 21k of paintext, roughly 16 times what should be necessary for such a simple page... Amongst the things contributing to the bloat is static style inlined in the markup, presentational markup, overuse of the STYLE attribute, endless pointless classes for Christmas only knows what, endless pointless div, paragraphs around non-paragraph elements, tables for layout, etc, etc... Seriously, this: <div class="rssincl-itemdesc"> <div style="color: #000000;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size:12px; font-size: 12px; width: 555px;"> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0"><tbody><tr><td width="140" valign="top" rowspan="2"><div style="border: 1px solid #999999; margin: 0px 10px 5px 0px;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWjbP_8nllE&feature=youtube_gdata"><img alt="" src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/UWjbP_8nllE/default.jpg"></a></div></td> <td width="256" valign="top"><div style="font-size: 12px; font-weight: bold;"><a target="_blank" style="font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold; font-decoration: none;" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWjbP_8nllE&feature=youtube_gdata">Gaza-bound ship 'attacked by Israel forces'</a> <br></div> <div style="font-size: 12px; margin: 3px 0px;"><span>Mikael Löfgren, media coordinator spokesman for the Estelle, spoke to Al Jazeera from Stockholm, Sweden.</span></div></td> Code (markup): Is NOT how any of those tags or attributes are supposed to be used! Not sure how much of that is crapped together by RSSInclude, but I really do mean crapped together as it's a laundry list of how NOT to write HTML, CSS, or even build a website. I'd suggest using some simple PHP to pull your RSS feeds, instead of that absolutely dreadful off the shelf solution. Stylistically the px metric fonts, low paddings, and lack of semantics makes it an accessibility train wreck as well. Fluid columns adjusting to width and media queries would go a LONG ways towards straightening the page out on that front.
Seriously, somebody knows what they are talking about...lol. I clearly and freely admit, I have no clue what I'm doing with css and rss. And I know how frustrating it is to get stuck on some idiot's slow loading page so I want to apologize to everyone and yourself who went to my page to help and wound up regretting it. That said, is there any way to salvage this design? Because I really like it and always wanted an automatically updating news website where I could occasionally add content manually.
