I would suggest you to use MyBB 1.6.5. this version has forum merge opportunity. You can easily switch into vBulletin from MyBB without losing a single post.

Phpbb is the best one but if you are new to this field I would like to recommend you to use Simplemachines forums.

Personally, I think that phpBB is the forum software to use, mainly because it is one of the most common out there so your forum users will already be familiar with it. If you use an alternative that is not so well know it will take your users extra time to learn it.

I can really recommend MyBB forums, I run one myself. My reason:
    - many features like the instant quick reply, the feature-rich user management and the good customization options
    - plugins can be installed quickly, mostly without manual code edits
    - The in-built statistics to keep track of forum growth
    - the good community that helps with problems and provides many plugins
    - and I just like the way it is

$160.00 is not a big number compared to its benefit.

Honestly, their is no one that you can say is a perfect choice for you. Every software have some cool benefits and some things that you don`t like. It just depends on your requirements.

Personally i divide them into 2 categories: Free and Paid

In free forum software MyBB will be my choice, because of its simplicity and ease of use.
In paid forum software, Xenforo will be my choice. Although its really new and lacks a lot of basic features but its core version is too good to compete even vb5.
