What is the future of Search Engine Optimization?

What is the future of Search Engine Optimization? Maybe someone from Google can answer this for us.

I remembered the massive changes in SEO these past decades. Heck, even the changes in the last 3 - 5 years.

    Think about it:
    • Back in the really old days 100 links was supreme. Then came 1000 links. Today 10,000 links! I'm talking about links in every general aspects; Back-links, external and internal links, reciprocal links, follow and no-follow links, etc..
    • Website pages; back then 100 webpages was supreme. Then 1000 webpages. Today 10,000 webpages!
    • Words, tags, descriptions; well I think you get the idea... let alone social media sites.
So in another 10 years time, is it necessary to have a 100,000 links, 100,000 webpages, 100,000 social connections, etc.. I'm sure some sites are pulling these stat figures already.

I mean, what would the competition be like against someone who has be around online for 10-20 years, and who have accumulated a lot, compared to someone just starting out?

Do you think there will be somewhat like a SEO bubble?
Yes, fads come and go... so what do you think of the current fads that will appear and disappear?
What do you think SEO will be looking and implementing even it hasn't been implemented yet?

Well, I guess I will be coming back to this thread in 10 years time and see what we have/had to say about the topic and then compared of how right or how utterly wrong we are/were.:D

    Ideas anyone?

In 10 years there is going to be some ridiculous thing we have never heard of yet, and we will need 1000 of them to be #1 on Google. If Google exists in 10 years.

But I won't be worrying about that, I'll just be cruising in my flying car.

Its hard to predicts whats going to happen in the next 10 years as things right now are shaping up too quick.. But I think SEO is going to get more difficult and only white hat tactics will probably survive only.

    I like this idea.
If I was to conjure of "an outside the box thinking", a shift in how the things work, then a visual based search engine is a fascinating idea. We are visual creatures and a visual representation of a search query combine with information is highly desirable.
I think at this stage, it is not executed as the average user doesn't have a super-fast computer to load the graphics..... I'm sure the day will come.

The future of SEO is, I'm afraid, PPC. That is unless Google stops forcing people out of rankings.

Most threads, posts and articles I read seem to indicate that SEO will pretty much be dead in the next few years. Simply relevant, quality content will be the sole measure for search engine ranking. PPC will remain because it's a quick and easy method to get traffic....Plus Google, Yahoo etc. make to much money from it! ;)

A good thought. The only difference between SEO and any other field is that you can't really project the future and work towards it. It's more meaningful to do what is right today and rank. That is what we call being prolific! For those who have been IMers for quite some times, there is definitely a big advantage over the newbies.

I just wish that Google change the algorithm in such a way that all spammers could get banned just after their first post. So that it may make a spam free SEO only for good use.

I personally wish that Google would completely do away with backlinks.....It's so time consuming and to be blatantly honest, boring.

SEO is one of the most important aspects of modern web design. The aim of Google is to produce results that are pleasing to people searching out websites, so having a high quality site can act as a form of SEO in itself. In the long run it’ll pay off as more specifically optimised pages eventually become obsolete. With social media and networking becoming an increasingly widespread and important facet of personal computer use, it seems likely that this trend for social network oriented search results will continue.
Overall, the future of SEO will be more complex than in the past.
if you construct your content with longevity in mind, and are diligent with implementing emerging social networking features, you can ensure that your sites are future proof.
