Since Penguin, pretty much any links you "manufacture" by "planting" links on sites belonging to other webmasters is only going to lead to your site being filtered by Google. This includes signature links here and on other forums, spamming blogs, article submission, video submission, directory submission, and any other spam technique you come up with to build links quickly.

If your domain is of value to you then the ONLY way to build links is to create great content and tools that other webmasters will WANT to link to themselves without you having to "plant" an unnatural link on their site. Build something great... find sites that would find what you built useful to their visitors... and let them know about your content/tools. Let THEM decide whether they would like to link to you.

If your content and tools are low quality or even just mediocre, getting links will be a bitch.

If you truly have built something great then you will have NO problem getting natural, editorial links from webmasters of other relevant, authoritative sites in your niche.

 

Create awesome content and share it. Wait till some users and bloggers link back to you.

If you want to build quality links that will stand the test of time, I would higly recommend that you read everything you can find written by Eric Ward (ericward.com and also contributer on Search Engine Land's Link Week). They call him "Link Moses". He's probably the most famous and best link builder on the planet. When Sports Illustrated or National Geographic launch a new web site, they call Eric to promote it.

He has been preaching merit-based link building forever... essentially, that good link building HAS to start with great content. You have to create something that other people would die to have or read. Once you've done this, building links for it (not planting links, but getting other webmasters to link naturally) is VERY easy.

Read his old posts at ericward.com. They are pretty much timeless.
