I have been using adsense for more than three years, according to my experience placing at the right place is not enough. High quality content, high pageviews, and adsense with related content will attract visitors to click it. If your website is about cars, but the ads is showing different things, it will not work as well. This require good content and little bit seo also. Again, placing at the right place alone is not enough. Just my own experience. Maybe others a little bit lucky.
