We don't submit to search engines. Search engines find us.
On the other hand, submitting to directories can provide results including:
    1) Higher rankings for key phrases
    2) Higher Pagerank
    3) Traffic from the directories

you don't need to submit to search engines. if other sites link to you, they'll find you.

submitting to directories is usually worth your time. however the quality ones (dmoz, yahoo) are very hard to get in.

it's usually easiest to just get some links pointing at your site.

I found directory submissions a complete waste of money. I get about 0.5% traffic from them across many domains. Better off paying a little for relevant links or getting traffic to you another way.

    Col :)

The general free directories give you a good start. However, most are only going to give you low PR not very quality links. You can use them to get you up to a PR 3 or 4 and then do link trades with higher PR sites to help you keep increasing.

I don't think you can expect to get real high in the serps for the competitive keywords just using directories.

One of the best ways to get an early start in Google, is to have them find you thru links from sites that they like. There are a few paid directories which really do the job. DMOZ does benefit you as well, and they are free. But who wants to wait 6 months to a year when they have a business to run ;)

definitely varies by niche, in my experience. I have sites that get 2,500+ unique visitors a day from DMOZ-- and others that get a few a year...

    but the links never hurt.

... well, they never hurt on the right domain, anyway.

with a bit of research, you can find free links that can get you in google (that google likes) pretty easily.

Very true. The question is if you really want to put in the effort and time. Many business owners rather pay something to submit to a good directory to get the job done. (Something I understand considering that not everyone out there is that web savvy :))

yeah, agree completely. if you have no idea where to go about doing that and you're running a serious, big business I'd certainly pay for inclusion in a few big directories.

but if you've been in the industry a while you tend to learn where to get free links to kickstart sites. :)

I do submit to some directories. Most are paid...

Directories is nice in getting your anchor text percentage up ;)

In my opinion directory links have quite a few advantages

    1. They age
    2. They can provide good co citation if the directory is well moderated
    3. They are generally free or a one time fee
    4. They can potentially send some targetted traffic and depending on your niche you may just need one targetted visitor to have a positive ROI and after that the SEO benefits are just an added bonus.

for obvious reasons I won't be giving out the url... but two things help. 1) the site is listed high up (not deep within) the directory and 2) there are few other sites in said category and I'm "starred" so I show up first

People often make this mistake, what is said is you shouldn't submit to search engines, not directories. So submit to directories, not to search engines :)

Basically, get links from sites/pages that Google likes.
