Aside from linking to other websites, categorizing these links is a better way to target their market.

Benefits of directory links are as below:-
    1. Backlinks comes slowly ... Google never doubt having them un natural links.
    2. This is basic part for doing SEO starting of a site. Because links will come slowly so it should be done at first.
    3. Direct traffic gain via Directories to your site.
    4. No Google Udpates have major effect on such backlinks.
    5. Long time one way backlinks.
    6. Very Economic to get such links. You can outsource the job as well.
    7. Its not so effective if only used Directory submission. But very effective if used in parallel of other services.

Main purpose of directory submission is getting backlinks. Another thing could be getting traffic. I don't think, people do directory submission for any other reasons.

Directory submission is helpful mainly for backlinks but if the directory is dmoz or yahoo directory then it will boost your search engine ranking which will bring you more organic searches

Directory submission is a marketing practice followed by web masters. If you submit your links to directories, your links will appear in relevant category. The most important directory advantage or benefit of listing with several directories is 'link building'.

Reputable directories like DMOZ serve to get your name out there, but many others can actually hurt you.
