    A lot of answers on here say SEO is a method or technique. SEO is really not one method or technique, but a set of techniques. Search engines base their rankings on key principles in a site, and knowing how to utilize these principles will optimize your site and improve your page ranking(PR) on search engines. That is SEO.

    For instance: Google emphasizes reputation as the #1 factor to consider for how well a site should rank. How do they measure reputation? Originally, and still a very important factor, is by checking backlinks. The more reputable backlinks you get, the more reputable it is said your site will be. This was groundbreaking and originally what made Google better than Yahoo, Excite! and the others. Backlinks was the secret ingredient that produced organic results usually very well, with top sites being the best sites. SEO you can say is manipulating the system a bit, but really it's just learning how to use the system to improve your site's ranking. It means a lot to be on the first page instead of second when someone makes a Google search.

    Now with all the updates there is A LOT more considered than just backlinks. That is why SEO is such a big field.
