To answer the OP, the safest way to find a supplier is to visit the chamber of commerce of a country you're interested in. In my experience Eastern European stuff has the best quality/price ratio. Besides, as the European Union regulates the industry, you won't be able to find titanium in childrens jewellery and unsafe fuses in gadgets there. I've also worked with American and Japanese suppliers but they are more expensive.

The first thing is to decide what you're going to sell. Think about what people need. I am selling stuff that sells well regardless of recessions and downturns you need to do the same.

You need a copy of Skype and 10EUR to make unbelievably cheap phonecalls. Then go to google and search for "chamber of commerce COUNTRY" where you replace the country with whatever you're looking for.

Chambers of commerce list only legitimate businesses. Make a shortlist, check their websites and call them.

Alibaba is not bad if you know how to approach it. Wanna laugh? I once registered on Alibaba with a fake company to prove my mate that it is possible to bend the system and that many of the guys selling "good stuff" on Alibaba are scam artists.

Alibaba.com is legit if do a factory tour first.

If you take pictures or can produce digital stuff, use bockie.com to sell them or something.

Otherwise you can always buy stuff from ebay and sell them on amazon.

Frankly, the best products to sell online are digital products...There's no inventory, no shipping costs, no supplier shortages, etc...Most of the wealthiest people in internet marketing make their fortunes from digital products...

 

Here you are assuming that its only the physical products that you can sell. However, there are several e-products you can find online which you would be able to resell. For instance, you can sell SSL certificates, webhosting products, domains, themes, etc.
