Making A Living Copywriting - Is it Possible?

Can you make a living copywriting in today's economic environment? I mean, things are tough, money is scarce, who wants to spend money hiring a copywriter? The short answer is: ANYBODY THAT WANTS TO COMPETE. That's the truth. Good copywriters are hard to find, that's why the best are making 6 figure incomes and getting up to $5,000 for a large campaign. Not every copywriter is making that kind of money, but some are...the best are. And then the question becomes, what about the newbies? Can people still break into the game and make a living, let alone get rich? My answer from experience is, YES. That said, it's not easy. You have to WORK at it...consistently and steadily. That is just the way it is. Nothing just falls on you...well, mostly.

Do other writers agree or disagree? Can you make a living doing copywriting today? If you are doing it full or part time, do you have any tips or methods other people wanting to get into professional writing might use? ~Lynn

Hello. I was researching a website and stumbled across this forum and then this post. I'm very interested in finding out more about online copy writing opportunities. I've had quite a bit of experience in the advertising and marketing world where I honed my technical writing skills and I have always sporadically written creatively for enjoyment. Where would I go about finding these opportunities you mentioned? I've been unemployed for about a year now and I've had some trouble finding legitimate, paying gigs online. There are, seemingly, millions of listings for paying writing jobs and I have no idea how to separate the worthwhile from the time wasters. Any advice?

I'm hoping that I can make a living off of it! I'm just getting started in the field as I am unexpectedly moving back to the US after a time living in southern Africa (long story) and hoping that I can make a go of copy writing. I know it will be a lot of work, and I'm prepared for that. I would also appreciate any tips that any experienced and well-established copy writers could offer. :)

Copywriting if done well can be a major source of income. However you'll need a substantial number of gigs to really make a living.

I don't think that you can make a living from it working online. The prices are just too low and too much time is required to do original articles. When it's easier to make money flipping burgers than writing, then the system is broken.

Chant, you are wrong about not being able to make money online writing articles. YOU CAN make money...every day. And you can do the work when you want and from anywhere in the world. The demand is out there, but the key is finding and developing clients. Today, I have personally made $115 dollars writing articles and reviews and blog posts. I generally make $30 - $100 but the average is about $50. That is for a 30 day period. That means that I bring in $1500 - $3,000 monthly without working that hard. That said, I definitely do work at this.

What I have found is that people just don't know how to get and keep clients. You need a system, an approach, a philosophy and a procedure. You have to know the steps you will follow every day and then just complete the steps and keep at it. Now that I have my process in place I know I can do well and work as much or as little as I want to work any day I choose to work. As I am writing this I am in London. I have 15 articles in the cue to be done. Each one is going to be an average of $10 USD. That means I have $150 of work to do. I can do this in one day because I have a system that helps me write fast and well, and I have a way to keep getting jobs. So, the bottom line is that you can make money online...you just have to know how to do it. ~Lynn

Hey Lynn C, You have said the true thing. Many of us Dont know how to keep and find clients , which ultimately lead then to believe that cheapest rates are best policies to get them . But by doing so they in turn losses their good clients they have and consequently the reputation the gained....
We really need to keep a particular, on of a kind , Philosophy, Approach and Technique to do things as easily as possible . Making out at least $100 a day is good i think.

    Thanks

There will always be great writers and good writers but to make a living out of it demands more than just skills in one type of writing. You should know what the market wants and at the same time you should know what Google wants too.

How much do you charge for one article of say 500 words. $10?

Surely a good copywriter is better off writing for their own website, rather than for someone else? Is it the case that they'd rather not have the hassle of being a webmaster?

I know it has already been said, but I will say it again: Yes, you can make money, a lot of money, writing copy. The key is knowing how to market your copywriting business. Talent by itself is not enough. You have to network and market the business online and offline, but it's doable and can be extremely lucrative.

    Yes you can!

And you'll find tons of advice and tricks. The best advice I have is to find your niche and strength as a writer. There are millions of writing jobs out there that pay slave wages. You can't make a living with those jobs, not one you can live on. If you want to be a copywriter because you love to write, avoid those $5 article jobs because they will eventually destroy your will to live.

That doesn't mean charge more than you're comfortable with. Take into consideration your own experience against the competition. A great copywriter can charge $100 or more an hour, but that doesn't mean you should try charging that unless you have the skills, experience, and trustworthiness to back that up.

Writing is all forms can lead to profits. I do it all from info products to ghost writing to copywriting and so many others that I might be forgetting. I think the key is to find a system that works for you. I don't write articles as often because the time they take compared to the money just plain sucks. I rather write an ebook , and sale it for $7 unlimited times than write an article and earn $25 from it once. I also love kindle publishing because it's that all the time money that rocks. Little work and the same money makes for a very happy successful money.

I make a living doing copywriting so it's definitely possible. There are different ways you can go with writing, though.. you can ghost write for someone else, you can write articles for your own blogs, you can create information products, you can ONLY create sales copy, etc.. Guys like Craig Garber make millions from writing sales copy.
