Xara Photo and Graphic Designer takes care of all our vector drawing and photo editing needs.
Cost is less than $100, and support via tutorials and forums (Talkgraphics) is outstanding.

Blender for raw modelling and my own app for on the fly image editing / creation using Direct2d, for serious modifications to art Photoshop and for animations my own app, both Autodesk and Blender have a very comical way of animating, which is funny consider how expensive Autodesk products are.

I found that the easiest way for me to learn was through tutorials just found online. There are tonnes of sites out there that can help you do anything you wish, and often give a step by step guide, or a video to follow along to.

If there is something you are interested in creating, say a fancy way to design text for example, just search 'photoshop text tutorials' and it'll come up with tonnes of options (most normally say stuff like, 50 best tutorials, or 80 must see text something or other)

If you're looking for tutorials in photoshop this is a good link:
    http://www.rumonbd.com/category/psdstutorials/

    and Illustrator:
    http://www.rumonbd.com/category/vectordesign/

Also, the "classroom in a book" series is another helpful way to learn. Adobe offers a book for each of the Adobe Suite programs and they come with a disk, so you have all of the pictures to work with.
