Whois Privacy yes or no?

    Hello everyone,

first, I am new here and a little overwhelmed by all the information. So, sorry if this question was already asked and answered, but I didn't really find something matching in the search.

I'd like to register about 20 .info or .biz domains. I want to put some content on the sites and put my affiliate links on them.
    I would like to promote
    -forex programs
    -poker plattforms, sportsbetting plattforms
-some articles/stuff from clickbank, that I can identify with and be able to produce content for

My question is, is the Whois Privacy a good idea?
I 'm not planning on doing anything illegal, just I don't want to deal with some lawyer BS. Especially in the area I'm from, it's happens, that some lawyers send out cease-and-desist warnings without any proof, and they are demanding a high fee or demand that you take your website down, otherwise they go to court. And I don't want to deal with that.

Also, do I have to write my contact information on the website? Or is it enough that I write on the bottom contact: webmaster@xyz....... c) 2012 website xyxzyux....

Also, where is a good site to register the domains cheaply? I've read something about that in the forum, but in those offers where you pay .49c, it's said that they get you with the renewals. And they should have the privacy included for all the domains that I register. I just asked in the live chat at register.com and they say a domain is 38$/year and 14 $ whois privacy per website. doesnt matter if .com or .info. so more than 1000$/year... omg.
I could pay about max. 3$ per domain/year and, where can I get the best privacy option?

Would appreciate some help, thanks! :)

FYI, no whois privacy will protect you from legitimate infringement claims (aka "lawyer BS")

dreamhost is fine for me, it is located in the usa, so at least they won't buy the austria lawyers BS, their domain name is 9.95$ per year with whois privacy included.

Don't try to save too much money, paying $10 a year for a domain name is fine.

Privacy only protects you from people casually checking who owns a domain. As soon as someone wants to send you a legal notice they can, it just adds delay to it getting to you when your domains are private. I have found it serves no real purpose and certainly not the one you are looking for it to have.

As for cheapest domain names. Almost always it is Godaddy using various coupons. The poster above me links to some rebate program as well. I never deal with rebate personally cause they are just a hassle to me. Godaddy has not sold .info for .49 since January. It is not certain they ever will again. You can buy them for $1.99 now though and who knows if that will go up or down.

godaddy offers privacy free for the period of the initial registration when you register 5 or more domains. For example if you register 5+ domains for a year you get free privacy for a year, if you register them for 3 years you will get free privacy for 3 years. But privacy won't be free if you renew the domain past the initial registration term!

Thanks for all the answers and the good information.

I wouldn't bother with Whois privacy protection. As other people have remarked, lawyers can still contact the Privacy Protection provider; and they will give out your email address. The primary reasons for using privacy protection are (1) to cut down on domain-related spam and (2) to conceal your identity for domains that you'd prefer not be associated with publicly (for example, pornographic sites).

Personally, I find that spam is a negligible problem. Even with 10,000 domains where the Whois information is publicly accessible, I only have to delete a a few emails per day. And just as often I receive messages that I'm glad to get this way -- (1) notifications of domains for sale that I choose to buy myself and (2) offers from individuals who want to purchase MY domains. If I had used Whois privacy protection, I would not receive such messages.

If you are still looking for for privacy protection, try Optinom.com, 9.69/year with Free WHOIS protection.

    thanks for the replies.

name.com is also not expensive but godaddy slightly cheaper.

quick question: what do you consider best for hosting?
should I get some hosting from godaddy also, or can I take a free hoster like x10hosting.com?
are there any disadvantages of that free hoster, do you know other free hosters you recommend?
I'm a little sceptic, how and why do those sites give webhosting away for free?

I've never used free hosters before, but I assuming there would be some catch like having ads on your pages or something.

Since you are promoting a lot of sites and need hosting for them, I would strongly consider Hostgator.com's Baby Plan. I've been with them for years without any problems. Around $6.50 a month for unlimited Addon domains and unlimited space is probably one of the best deals around. I would register the domains at GoDaddy and then host all 20+ of your sites on that single Hostgator plan.

Hey, here I am again :)

hm I came across hostmantis and they seem to have the best prices. and read some bad reviews about godaddy hosting.
the starter package at hostmantis is $2.49/month, unlimited domains included and 10 GB monthly transfer and 5 GB disk space. is that enough for about 20 domains and average traffic?

This is crazy.. There should be no more monthly transfert or disk space issues.. Simply by taking the host I use, and paying some little money, you would have all the power you need.. I don't understand why wanting to spend so much time saving some money instead of using that time on earning more money.. I think you should not save little money on something that is the backbone of whatever online project you have. I don't like when there are technical problems due to hosting, and especially the monthly transfert and disk space issues should be gone for good, like they are on dreamhost, they never bothered me about those two issues.
Also for fees, I can testify that dreamhost fees are CLEAR and cheap (I would pay more for the same) and many things are included where on other hosts they would be paying features, such as whois privacy but not only..

Anyway, if you're stuck in the saving money thinking, then my rant will be just that, but if you can change this thinking at least for the hosting part, then it will have been useful to you at least :)

not correct, most whois privacy services (including godaddy), publish an unique whois email address for each private domain you own, all of them redirecting to your real email address, but hiding publicly any connection between those domains.

I use the Whois Guard at namecheap for most of my domains, but it's mainly to stop the junk mail I was constantly getting. If you are in a legal gray-area, it will not help you. Don't think you can just use fake information either, because then your domain can be taken away from you without notice.
