i would like a feature that would help me not go BALD while doing all of this stressful stuff.

 

Good ideas. It would be a great tool for helping to identify those sites that likely need to be re-reviewed.

I do like the suggest category at time of submission. It allows you to submit to the appropriate category and not waste time hunting around for something that is semi-suitable.

 

I have a "comments" field on my submission forms which people can use to submit category suggestions, as well as any other information. In my opinion that's all you need.

Some have suggested that submitting a category at the same time as a site could increase spam. That hasn't been my experience. Being able to submit a site and a category at the same time can benefit all submitters, spammy or otherwise, so it's worthwhile to develop this.

 

More wish list items:

• tag listings for multiple categories - I like how MSN's sbd and business.com allows listings to be shown in multiple categories. Some listings really are appropriate for more than one category.
• editor rating system - with user definable criteria so that editor(s) can rate a listing on admin defined criteria and calculate an editorial score. HRWEBDIR currently does something like this.
• private editor note field - for comments, notes, etc. related to the listing. This is especially helpful when I want to contact the owner before approving the listing and want to remind myself (or other editors) why its in the pending queue.

Just to add to the list:

A full-fledged module system that completely abstracts out the installation process of all suggested mods. Like vbulletin system, where one can easily install/uninstall any kinda vb mods with one-click without having to dig into the source code and manually modify the code, and then forget later what has been changed during upgrade.

That's great to hear Rob. I'm hopeful that this thread might spark all script designers to really think about the needs of directory owners and improve their offerings.

 

Another one which I've requested before in several places: a better captcha system. Looks like this one is going to happen!

 

That's an interesting concept. The blogging software I use does that.

I worry when I see things like - "Oh, yeah that mod won't work with the new version."

 

Another item:

• editor comment field that can be injected into email notifications - To allow editors the option of explaining why a site was rejected or just add a general comment to the submitter.

 

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have flagged this thread, and will be reviewing it after the release of phpLD 3.10.

One thing that goes unnoticed is the amount of work we put into:
1) Making the script secure
2) Making sure the script runs on a variety of platforms
3) Improving the existing functions so that everything runs smoothly

3.10 is big improvement on all of the above, and will be available shortly (beta 2 is this week).

There are a couple more items that will be added to this list on the day of beta 2 release.

As soon as 3.10 is released, we will be starting into some additions to the script. Most likely they will be released in the form of mods, and then they will be included in a new release a month or two later.

 

Awesome news David. I am not a php/web programmer, but I have extensive experience as an applications programmer (Windows), so I am well aware of all the work that goes into the most mundane and overlooked of features. You can't fault me (et. al.) for pushing the envelope with suggestions/requests.

 

Hey Bernard, you may not be a php programmer, (I'm not) but your ideas are very good and pushing the envelope is exactly what phpLynx is doing thanks to this. With ideas like yours and others we've managed to get all these features and then some in. But, don't take my word for it, it will be for others to judge when its released this month.

dduval is spot on with his comments on security and platform compatability and learning from others lessons is one thing I hope phpLynx will have achieved.

Hi Obelia, your scepticism is understandable based on the content level of some scripts out there at the moment. Even though bernard mentioned it might be 'pie in the sky' with his request of 'simularity checking', it certainly is feasable, if not viable, and although the ingredients to this pie might take a little more preparation it doesnt mean it wont get made. I won't waffle on about what we have got and what we haven't, as you rightly said, seeing is believing.
