Look at your overall traffic and rankings for core keywords. If you've taken a big hit you've likely been penalized.

Adding to dcristo suggestion, you can use tools like semrush for a traffic drop idea. Check with Opensiteexplorer if you're facing anchor text over optimization or Panda hit because of lot of rehearsed content (textually unique but not exclusive)

Things would help you specifically if you check around Panda and Penguin update dates (April 24th, May 17th, June 11th etc.)
You might have received the webmaster alert too.

Yeah thats a good point. See what date you took a hit and check if there was a major algorithmic update on that same day.

As I experience with panda update my sites' ranking & traffic dropped dramatically in second week of May 2012. Because main target of update was black hat, keywords stuffing and clocking.

Look, As I experience google panda make our website ranking lower when we are using same contents of others.
and google penguin makes our website ranking lower when we making link from same keyword again and again.

Suppose you keywords are on first 5 pages. Now your keywords automatically down to below 15 pages. Than you know that this is due to penguin update. If you are using Black hat seo technique than you keywords which are in first 5 pages due to black hat seo. Those are never come again up at same position in future. Because penguin update algorithm not accept the black hat seo technique..

The lowering of search engine traffic match with a decrease in positioning.

People that have been pinged for copying or spinning content deserve all the pain they get, over optimisation is a complex subject.
