The choice on what you use on certain occasions is really dependent on what you want to do. A website, some printed business cards, brochures, a 3D logo? Different tools for different occasions.

I use Photoshop mostly; I find Illustrator difficult to work with. I'm no graphics pro, just making the graphics I need for my own website. Sometimes I use GIMP...

I use photoshop mostly too. Similarly I find Illustrator difficult, however it's extremely powerful.

Illustrator is hard to master at first but there are lots of great free tutorials online on Youtube that will gte you started and going. It is a very powerful tool, the industry standard in fact for vector graphic design.

Yeah this is true, I should really try harder with it! It's amazing how different it is to photoshop to be honest, I thought it would be a smooth transaction but it's proving difficult.

For doing most anything that any Adobe product can provide, there is usually a viable, feature-filled open-source alternative. Try GIMP instead of PS and take a flyer with Inkscape rather than Illustrator. You may be surprised at how much value you can gain for nothing to invest.
