You do NOT want to have a link profile that has all quality links.. that is very un natural, there needs to be a balance in the types and quality of links you have in your profile.
The ratio of tier 1 to tier 2 to tier 3 links is very important. Tier 3 links should never link to your money site, Tier 2 links certainly can.. but a quality link profile needs both authoritative links as well as supportive links to be balanced.

Hi, I have an ecommerce site that is very niche specific and it's domain name is the key phrase that I am targeting. It has been live for a couple of years and has always had first place on page 1 for that phrase but has now dropped to position 2, not a huge drop I know but still a concern.My problem is that position 1 has now gone to a national department store that stocks this product along with countless other products. They are not specialists in this field and the page that has this position has not been optimised for this phrase.They presumably have this position as a result of the number of back links that they have across their entire site, rather than to pages that are relevent to this niche. They only have one page of products relating to this niche when my site has multiple pages of niche specific content and a relavent domain name.Adding even more content does not seem to make any difference and I don't want to just add bulk content that is just there to pad things out and might look a bit spammy. I can probably never equal the number of back links that they have, without resorting to spammy blog links etc.I would not mind if I had lost the position to another specialist supplier but think that Google has got it wrong by putting more weight on link popularity, which in Google's eyes equals 'trusted status' than to content relavence. Google says relavency is important, but clearly not as important as keeping the big boys at the top.Anyone got any thoughts on this?

 

Quality content. Focus on quality content as much as possible. Make sure your backlinks come from good sites that are in the same niche as your site. If you have a lead gen site for electricians, join electrician forums, LinkedIn & MeetUp groups and post good, useful content. That will give you good rankings for the long haul. But always be building quality backlinks. You don't necessarily need a lot, you just need some.

 

As everyone else has said... Quality content is the true way to go. Ensure your on-page optimization is good aswell.

But also, you should have a SOLID high quality off-page seo going on too. This means no spammy crap. Make relevant backlinks and create relevant content on web 2.0's and etc.
