VPS Problems

I'll start by saying that I'm a complete server novice. The only reason I chose a VPS was because I was missold by the company rep. I've got zero server administration experience.

The VPS I'm running is sporadically running like a dog. Using the Virtuozzo control panel I can see that one of the resources - privvmpages - is regularly maxing out and causing everything to fall over.

When I speak to the technical guys they treat me like an idiot because I haven't got a clue what they're talking about.

There is practically no traffic on the server. Most of the sites are small, static sites but there are a handful of database driven sites (WordPress and phpBB) which, I'm guessing, are the ones causing the problem.

Can anyone give me some advice on this? Like I said, I know next to nothing about servers. All I know is that since moving to this company (who I'm not going to name for the moment) I have had nothing but crap from them.

Any help would be gratefully received.

 

from what ive found on the net, privvmpages is your ram burst allowed (where as oomguarpages is your guranteed ram)

On the assumption that ram burst is memory related and it's database queries which are causing the problem, how do I check to see how much I've been allocated and how can I change it?

There really is very little traffic on this box so the number of db queries shouldn't be making it fall over

 

it should tell you on the host order page somewhere.

are you sure your VPS has not been hacked?

i have a VPS with 1GB burst (256 guranteed) and about 15 - 20 sites (all with a bit of traffic) all sites are php/mysql run (apart from 1 or 2) and ive never reached my limit.

also check that one of the scripts, or the os has not gone awol and running in a continuous loop.

 

Well I've just spoken to the "support" guys and they're investigating although it doesn't sound promising as the guy I spoke with had no idea what privvmpages was...

He is of the impression that someone else on the node is hammering the system resources and I'm suffering

 

I know this is no help... but you should have gone with a managed VPS server.

 

its probably not your fault at all. i've had experience with many VPS providers and most of them have abosolutely no idea what they are doing or how to setup the servers correctly.

I would highly recommend solarvps.com who i'm with now, never had any problems with them.

Whenever your server load is high login to ssh and type this command *top*.It will show you that which process is taking load so i think you can easily track it

Tell me about it! I was seriously missold the product. There is NO way I would have agreed to take on the responsibility of managing a server if I'd known. Problem is that I've paid up until July next year and I can't really afford just to walk away, much as I'd like to.

Solar VPS look very good. $45 for a managed VPS? That's only $15 more than I'm currently paying for this shambolic nonsense....

servint.net also have good managed VPS deals, thats who im currently with (49/month) plus there support is top-rated and answered as quickly as you ask it.

i would also recommend servint because

1) any errors that are caused by me (apache taken down by dodgy http.conf or by a runaway script), they can usually fix within the hour.
2) if any downtime is due to them (e.g. hardware failure) they conpensate you well. (i was down for 5 - 9 hours and recieved a months free) (only happened once)
3) they can and will install 3rd party scripts for you.
4) they do regular backups of your vps (altho i still recommend you do your own )

 

Which OS are you using?Cent Os is recommended for VPS.I think you use BSD becuase top command works on all linux distros

If you are having problems managing your server, i would recommend using seeksadmin.com

 

I am with PowerVPS and KnownHost, and can say nothing but good things about their uptime and support. Both are managed services so if your familiar with cpanel WHM you would be very capable.

 

Personally, I recommend purchasing dedicated if you are paying like 60-70$ for vps!

I'm only paying $45 for each plan, including cpanel.

 

VPS in my oppinion it;s not worth If you have a low budget then buy cheap server and outsourcing management.
With a little money more you can find a very good hosting provider
