asp has been replaced by asp.net but hte issue is what server platform you want to develop for ... asp.net runs on Windows server while php runs on linux/unix

Once you understand program methodology, you'll be able to look at PHP and ASP code and see similarities.
ASP.NET is just as "easy" to learn as PHP.

If you are a beginner to Web Development, I'd start with HTML and javascript to understand the concepts. Once you understand those, you can better choose which platform is better for the application you're looking to design.

    Easy choice.

If you plan on using a Unix/Linux server ASP is not an option. ASP is only available on a Windows based server. Also keep in mind ASP isn't a full language. You're going to need to use VB or one of the other .NET languages to make use of it.

Personally I'm a LAMP developer. Mainly because I'm big in to the open source movement and I like *free*. =)

LAMP = Linux. Apache. mySQL. PHP/Perl/Python (whatever your poison is).

I am an asp .net programmer. Currently I am learning PHP. It depends in your situation if you are working as freelancer then go for PHP but if you are a full time employee .net will add more value compare than PHP.
