    Let me paraphrase your question.
    Maybe you mean how is SEO useful for website ranking.
    SEO means Search Engine Optimization now if you want to rank above the rest (competitors).
    There are ONLY one way you can do this. Its on "SEO"
    Now for SEO, of course it ranges from broad concepts.
    My suggestion. Start with the BASIC.

    Don't forget also that Google doesn't have all the traffic. Apart from Yahoo/Bing, you should also look into getting traffic from Facebook and Youtube. It's very simple to create short videos and get traffic with them - if you get the right keywords, they will also rank very well on Google.
