Whats the best way to deal with SPAM comments on your Wordpress blog??

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by mmg1865, Jun 21, 2012.

I am currently getting around about 60 SPAM comments a day on one particular post on my Money Making Guide blog, the post is about Social Media.
I'm not getting the hits that match the comments so i'm wondering a couple of things ?

    a) how are they doing it ? Is it some sort of script or something ?

    b) how can i prevent it ?

Any help would be fantastic because its doing my head in having to delete them every day.

    Cheers guys.

    a) Well there are a few script's you can use to mass post on a list of blogs ;)

    b) I highly suggest using a good Antispam Plugin like Antispam bee and also add a blacklist of the IP's to your blog so it will prevent them from posting from the same IP again.

Well atleast it is one of the two best in my eyes besides antispam bee I am also using NoSpamNX which is kind of providing the same features but I had good experience running both and only one of them is offering the blacklist option but I don't know which one right now.

Infected computers run scripts that automatically post spam to WP blogs. If you want to do the footwork, find out what the IP addresses are of those that are doing the most of the spamming. It may be that you find they come from just a few countries - you can block those IP addresses with your .htcaccess file.

Have you seen what Wordpress themselves suggest? LINK

The best prevention for spam on your Wordpress blog is akismet, it's free and comes with Wordpress.

Most spammers use programs such as scrapebox, xrumer, SENukeX and other automated methods to mass spam hundreds of thousands of sites at a time. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent this. What I do on some sites which are targeted to a specific region, eg: Australia, is IP block regions such as China, South America and Russia which are large spam sources. You can use IPTABLES on your server to do this.

    This.

You're likely getting a ton of automated spam comments.

    Just activate the plugin.

I doubt that Aksimet is not 100% free anymore. They still have a free version but if you are a professional they will try to have you pay.

Where do you get Akismet for free? Everywhere it says I have to get a key and that is not free.

When you go to get the key, there is a slider that shows the price. Just slide it to zero and keep going. Seriously. It's free, and I use it on all my blogs.

The only thing with Akismet is it sometimes flags legitimate comments as spam, so I just go in every week or so, and check the spam folder, rescuing anything that shouldn't have gone there.

    Good luck.

As you know Askimet comes with wordpress right when you install it ;) So you basically can activate it right after the installation but I suggest not using it as it also is told it keeps sending information back to the home base you might not want to be send somewhere at all.

What do you mean exactly? It sends information back; you mean the comments visitors leave or actual content of the site that might be located in a secret part of the site?

Most of them are scripts. I use GASP & Aksimet to weed them out, now I only have to deal with a couple a day from human spammers. :)

Here's a good way to stop spammers
Install and activate this free plug-ins

Akismet - it is included with your WordPress -- you only need to activate the plugin and input your WordPress.com API key

Bad Behavior - this plug-in analyzes the delivery method, and the software used by the spammer, and prevents them from even getting to your site

Conditional Captcha for WP - this plug-in provides a captcha complement to akismet
If akismet identifies a comment as spam it will ask the commenter to complete a simple captcha ; if he fails then the comment will be discarded or trashed
