After the penguin update, is link exchange on a same niche still considered in your link building activity?
Yes I still use 3 way links exchange and achieve the result. The most important part is anchor you are using to build your links.
I personally tend to stay away from link exchanges in general, however in the same niche would of course provide you with better success than without. I would just verify sites you are exchanging links with are "in a good neighborhood".
Build your link manually. Avoid Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web. Don't go for excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.") & buying or selling links that pass PageRank.
Link exchange always considered as solid back linking method in SEO. so don't worry it will not fed up sooner.
Link exchanging is still effective for search engine rankings. The only thing we should keep in mind is to always use quality websites to build back links and we should never participate in link building process with parked domains or link farms.
According to me after the penguin update link exchange is not useful for rank the website on Google because if you are linking your site to many other site, Suppose your site is well prepared, designed and optimized according user and search engine both but your linking other website is using Black hat SEO and webspam techniques after the adding of your link. Then your site may harmful through those linking other website. So i would suggest for build link manually and get quality back links.
Most people hit by Penguin/Panda did ONE THING wrong because they just did ONE THING. For example, I know of someone who had the highest rankings simply by doing article marketing. Then, along comes Penguin, and voila!--gonzo. All the same anchor text published article directories that had been farmed out virtually everywhere. That is why I use The SEO System, where no users were affected by the evil twin-headed Panda/Penguin: the system forces you to use a variety of anchor text (including URL) on a variety of sites that naturally creates organic search results.
Link exchange was never good, not even before Penguin update. Link exchange is considered as a deliberate attempt of manipulating search engine rankings. So better stay away from it.
Link exchange is one of the violations Google stated on Webmaster policy. Better be oriented first before doing such thing. It will never benefited you good.
Direct link exchanges were dead long before Panda & Panguin. 3 way exchanges with niche related sites are still beneficial, though. WebDev
