What is your opinion on joining a webring

I have looked at joining a webring. Is this a good idea. I think that I can just add it to my links page and request that the visitor hyperlink to my homepage.

    Any experience?

I haven't used one in literally ages but I remember they were a decent way of gaining extra visits to your site.

The only downside is you are often required to place an ugly piece of code on your webpage which can take away from your look.

I once used a webring and created a specific landing page for people who cam from it. It did not hurt me. It took zero management time and it brought people who were actually interested in the type of material available on the site. That is a real bonus because those visitors tend to stick around and explore as long as your site makes a serious effort to present content. Make sure you peruse the other sites on the ring to make sure they are the types of sites which your visitors would appreciate discovering.

I've joined a handful of Webrings - they bring in a small amount of traffic (mileage will vary depending on niche). Perhaps more importantly are the small number of backlinks you'll get...

This is a relatively painless (and free) way of getting additional exposure for your web site, so it's certainly worth a try. They've just started an affilliate scheme, but you'll have to guess what my referral link is ;)

I personally don't rely on webring at all for traffic benefit. It's pretty much useless. But it may be good for less competitive niches.

I haven't had any luck with a webring. I expected it due to the traffic stats of the actual ring hub being low to start with. However, the ring had an ok pagerank so I thought I would give it a go. It seems like it got me indexed quicker.
