You can use it from cpanel. 301 redirect means permanent redirect. Suppose you have same content in different pages. So, Google will consider these pages contains duplicate content which is not good for your site. You will also get traffic for all these pages differently, But it should be in one place right? That's why you should use 301 redirect. If you change your website destination and want your audiences to your new site then 301 will be the only option.
    As for example:
    www.yoursite.com/onepage.html
    www.yoursite.com/aboutus/onepage.html

Now watch closely the above url's, onepage.html is in different places though they are having same content and same name. So in this case you can use 301 redirect.

www.yoursite.com/aboutus/onepage.html will be 301 redirected to www.yoursite.com/onepage.html or vice varsa. Hope you get the idea.

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

When you 301 redirect your page which you are redirecting will also move out of google's index - but this could take a very long time!!

[h=2]301 Permanent Redirect[/h] The 301 redirect is a lot like it’s cousin the 302 redirect, only it’s permanent. Well, it’s really not permanent (because clearly, you could change it again if you wanted to).

the thing i know about 301 redirect is 301 redirects are used to permanently move a site to a new location. Search engines do not apply penalties to 301 redirects the way they apply them to many other types of redirects.

301 redirect is the most efficient method for web site re-direction. It is used to redirect a website or web page permanently to other website or web page. It's not that hard to apply and it should retain your seo positions for that particular page. It can be done through Cpanel or defining proper rule in .htaccess .

301 redirect is the best method to preserve your current search engine rankings when redirecting web pages or a web site. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently". After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new location or file name. You implement the 301 redirect by creating a .htaccess file.
