There isn't really such thing as social media optimization. There is social media marketing (SMM), which is sometimes also called social media promotion. You need to develop a presence on social networks by creating company pages on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, etc. and then getting followers. Add sharing buttons (tweet, like, share) as well as buttons like "Follow on Twitter", "Join us on Facebook" to your site. You could also put forth an offer (a freebie or a discount) and include a line "Don't miss the next update! Join us on Twitter" or something like that. Also, post interesting, informative, relevant stuff (tweets, Facebook posts, YouTube videos, etc.) to connect with followers. There is a whole art to how to do it, and the way you do it on each social network is different. For example, you find geeks on Google+, youngsters on Facebook, yuppies on Twitter, industry professionals on LinkedIn, etc. If you want to get popular on those networks, you don't just sit quite and wait for people to follow you. You need to reach out to your audiences. Follow the key people in your industry. Retweet their tweets, comment on their posts, etc. Also, think of something viral to post, so that users share with lots of friends.
Pretty much everything above that was mentioned, be more active on the social networks and join groups... even write some content on those networks to give your self more reputation. You could even make some videos on youtube posting them on these networks.
