    Hello...

I had a question about edu and gov links...

Question: Does anyone know the value associated with having them compared to regular links?

    thx

I think matt cutts mentioned a little while ago that it is a myth that .edu or .gov give more juice but who really knows, plus it might mean something with the other engines.

Well, what i think is that they are valuable to increase any content based sites value in Search Engine Ranks and Results Pages (SERPS) . The PR which they pass is equal to PR passed by ay other site.

In one way I am telling that gov and edu sites have high trust rank and not page rank.

That's my belief as well, .edu and .govs are more likely as a whole to have higher trust ranks than other extensions and that's why they are favorable.

Mind you, getting a link on some students .edu subpage with a bunch of links on it is not going to be any extra benefit as the trust rank will not be there.

Any link is valuable as long as it is from an indexed page and preferrably a higher Page Rank site.

.edu and .gov can not be registered by individual so they higher trust by search engine
Worth or not only SE knows :)

Well i admit they are harder to link to, so some type of higher points would be fair to say are going that way.

    but whats they actual breakdown?

The only benifit of .gov and .edu is that they usually have high pagerank and are valuebale in that case, not because they have the .goc or .edu extension.

Sometimes, Matt Cutts say confusing things :) I do believe that it helps to get listed on these .edu and .gov sites.

I agree. these sites also appear on magazines, newspapers, and the like. so if your site is listed on their website, there's more exposure

Yeah definatley - As someone said its pointless renting off a students EDU page, but if you can get presell pages, or links from content pages it gives alot of weight and shares abit of the trust, don't forget alot of the domains are veerry old :D

That, and they are likely to gain pagerank over time. Governments especially tend to promote their websites with public information campaigns, TV advertising, and so on. They can afford to spend other people's money like that.

Government links aren't necessarily any more stable, though. If a government department gets reorganised and changes its name, you can get a whole lot of link rot, just as with the rest of the web.
