    addiction or binge drinking I wonder? look at the biggest party school lists they always have every year...I never hear about other countries having similar lists!

    You are absolutely right. And likewise, we shouldn't assume that because we are socially intolerant of drunks that there is any less abuse going on in other areas which might be more tolerant.

    I don't know. It may or may not be.

    A few things:

    1. Alcoholism isn't defined by amount of alcohol consumed. It's defined by repeated abuse in the face of or in spite of negative consequences.

    2. Alcohol may be more accepted among certain cultures and used in a greater percentage of the population on a regular basis, but that population may still have a low incidence of alcoholism.

    The age should be lowered people at 18 are mature enough to decide what they want to do.

    There are some good examples of how stupid the legal age to drink is at 21, You can prior to that;

    Die fighting for your country
    Drive
    Consent to sex
    Pay taxes
    Vote
    (what age limit are on gun ownership?)

    The US does has problems with Alcoholism. I would think the "eastern blocks" are at the top of the list.

    Drinking isn't intrinsically bad for you. what is bad for you, mentally and physically, Is drinking to excess and drinking for the wrong reasons. We can't legislate based on what those least able to make decisions will do.

    But there really is no good age to do any of that IMHO. It all depends on the parents and how they raise their kids. If they raise their kids to be strong and independent at an early age and make good decisions then lowered ages are great.

    But if the parents aren't heavily involved, allowing kids to do those things at an early age often leads to tragic consequences.

    It's all so subjective.
