Over the years I have submitted to thousands of free directories, as well as a few reputable, human-edited paid ones. But in the last few years I've submitted to very few free directories.

My suspicion — and this is only my suspicion, not a known fact — is that Google is probably not giving much value at all to free directories. Think about it, do we need 1,000 different copies of our city's phone book?!!
