VLC is the only player I ever use. It plays anything i throw at it..even partially downloaded broken files it will play. This is always the first program I install after I reformat my PC
I used to use VLC but GOM player beats all on the ground. These are the features I like. You can rip audio from video. YOu can increase gain of audio. It plays almost all video types (of course some plugs needed) Can add subtitle separately Renders video (though couldn't find the cache') Fine interface. The only con I found is that there is no next button. You can not jump from one song to the other with a click of a button.
