I think article directories are still good, I personally think it's the quality of the articles that are hurting people in there SEO efforts. Using spun articles or to closely re-written ect

Obviously they are good in giving do follow backlinks but all we have to consider is whether the article directory has good page rank and keyword ranking.

I disagree with most of the posters above. Google is slowly but surely weeding out article directories and removing them from the index. If one article is about an online casino, one article is about a flower shop in denver, one post is about real estate... no good.

Yes and no, it all really depends on how things go and what big guys like Google/Yahoo decide to do.

Of course they are still good if you are posting unique and informative content in those directories.

Well this method is outdated but still it of some use, as some people are also getting good back links from there. However it is recommended that you should only prefer high PR article directories like Ezine, Squiddo, BMR etc. as they are the most recommended ones.

Article Directories are offcourse useful. We get contextual links from the article distribution process and hence if you are working on any SEO Campaign, then Article Distribution will be a good technique. So, do not hesitate it. Contextual Links are favorites of Google, and hence there is no doubt in generating those links.
    Thanks

As long as your content isn't copy/pasted or automatically generated in any way, you will always benefit from having a unique article with a backlink (mixing contextual and naked linking).

Submit to higher PR directories for a faster boost

I would look for niche-specific article directories with manual approval of content. Steer clear of auto-approve sites and sites that try to cover all available topics.

Most article directories are of poor quality and you could end up building links that will give you a bad linking profile and get you penalized by Google.

Article directories, by their nature, promote and encourage the use of duplicate content. It would seem that regardless of how well-maintained they are that they will eventually be completely devalued by Google. G is already deindexing a lot of sites full of duplicate content scrounged from article directories. Penguin has also raised the specter of backlinks from bad neighborhoods negatively impacting a site.

All in all, it just doesn't seem worth it. If you're willing to write good stuff and give it away, it would seem far better to guest post on a blog.

As long as you know where to submit your content, then it'll benefit your site. Choose the top article submission sites that generate traffic/ or referrals

I am wondering the same thing if the article directories are becoming a problem for Google like website directories... I hear Google removed some website directories from their searches.
