    it depends on your niche. How competitive it is. For uncompetitive niches a keyword domain name is enough with one or two links but for my niche it means constant new fresh links all the time. That requires me to pay for links. So i get a steady stream of fresh links all the time.

    Well, I also don't pay for link building, I do link building myself, this way I know which link or tactic is helpful or not, this help in learning seo also.

    Before I also used the services of a company link building, there are many backlinks, but most of them are nofollow and from websites which are on the lower pages rank. My cost was around $ 400 per month.

    I just do it the natural way. With Google's introduction of the Panda system it's become increasingly difficult to purchase quality backlinks. If you want to get good backlinks cheap I suggest that you hire someone in Asia or Eastern Europe to post links in contextually relevant discussion forums. You can normally get this done for about 20cents a post/link.
