Install Google toolbar in your browser. There's an option in Google toolbar to show page rank, just enable it. Then open your site in the browser & the page rank button in Google toolbar will show you the page rank of your site.

To check back links in Google do a search for
    link:http://www.example.com
replace example with your domain URL.

Agree with akashseo. It is the best way to check the back link & PR of a site. You can also use same query in bing to check back link. In Yahoo query will be different linkdomain:example.com . Hope it helps you better.

I recommend two official tools for backlink checking:

    1) Yahoo Site Explorer (siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com) - displays a lot of links, and you can use it for any website, even if you don't own it.

    2) Google Webmaster Tools (google.com/webmasters/tools) - displays fewer links in my experience, and you can use this for your own websites only. However, these tools also provide other valuable data, like your search rankings, so I think this is a must-have.

Also, some people recommend Linkscape (seomoz.org/linkscape), but I haven't had much experience with it personally yet, so I cannot comment on its relative usefulness.

page rank check = use Google toolbar (free & must have toolbar for SEOs)
back link check = again use Google website (try searching what akashseo told in his post above)

Yes, for PageRank checking, Google Toolbar (toolbar.google.com) is the way. Using third-party tools that query Google programmatically without a proper license is against Google terms of service and can get you banned.

Try Chrome tools like SEO site tools and others. PR appears on the page load - very convenient.

Yeah, I would use something like http://www.seoquake.com/ to quickly check the PR and other website stats from within your browser (Firefox and Chrome).

I also use Foxy SEO for Firefox to quickly check backlinks with blekko.
