How to learn web design

I get a lot of emails from people starting out who want to learn web design.

I usually say, design websites because that's how you learn.

And there's TutVid.com, Planet Photoshop, Lynda.com, W3 Schools. And I had a couple of Sitepoint books that I found pretty useful.

Plus, I find forums very helpful, for example Estetica Design Forum, DesignForums.co.uk, Designer’s Talk, there’s Digital Point and Sitepoint for more code/technical queries, the WordPress forum is excellent and there’s Warrior Forum for internet marketing issues.

And, you can follow designers on Twitter, and LinkedIn groups and, maybe but not for me, FB groups?

Has anyone any other advice on how to learn web design? I'm thinking of doing a blog post on this.

Hmmm you can fined many information here.
I mean you are not first who ask "how to learn Web Des".
Step by step. Html, Css, Java script, php, you should know something about SQL, CSM system - Joomla, Wordrepss ( they are good both).
After that, if you have a time, I think you can make small Social network. No really, it will be anough for make what ever you want.
Download notepad++ and Denwer for work wihout CMS system and test your web site on your computer.
    It's all )))
Good luck ))and never get down.
PS: and yes )) start from W3schools )

First, learn HTML. Once you learned how to structure a website, start learning CSS. When you`re done with all that, go for JavaScript as this will help you add some very nice features to your designs.

Hands-on learning is the best teacher, imho. Person should start by working on personal projects before leaping on taking care of clients' websites. Plus continue their education and stay in the know with new technology and what's happening in website design sphere by reading journals or magazines dedicated to website design. Don't be afraid to learn the basics and few of programming languages e.g. jQuery or PHP/MySql. Never know when you'll be thrown into situation to test your experience by an client or company you work for.

w3schools.com has everything you need, but the best thing is to practice and look at other peoples code... preferably good code.

As always I would suggest you w3school. Their easy step by step tutorials would make it easy for you. If you are a little bit more serious you can find a mentor to help you.

Practice makes perfect, stop reading and looking at tuts and start creating your first designs, your first few designs might look like crap but keep on practicing, you should save your first design and look at it in a month or two and see how much u improved.
