hmm, I'm unsure.
-background. The background is much better than Mr. Lee's(sorry! lol). Its super cool.
-words/text. its a toss up against the previous one. Mr. Lee chose clean and you pushed some style into it.
-mascot. This is where I would have to say the other guy(is better) is winning. There's nothing too horrible with it and I would be "ok" with it. I does look a little too hand drawn and he's not really doing anything. He just happens to be there.
Well I hate criticize it too much. Its more than fine, just a matter of who's is better type deal.

Ha, you didn't make that. There's no way. Be honest, where did you steal that mascot from? Let's pretend you made it.
-Words/text. Flawless. Clean, got the little background box around it, decent color choice(I can work it out), and super clean. This is good work. Always room to get a little funky with a little more interesting text, but extremely acceptable as is.
-background. The background is just not turning my crank. Its just so unrelated and basic. While the front is perfect there is probably about 2minutes of work into the background there. The first image you presented is better then the second, but its really not good at all. Sparkle and Faiz got you there.
-Mascot. And we have a winner! Just kidding. Not yet. The mascot is where it counts and you clearly understand the concept. This little guy could be internationally known because of how cute he is. There is only two issues though.
A) That is not a dinosaur. That is a dragon. You can tell from the gaps between the teeth. Dinosaurs have more condensed teeth and dragons have snake like fang teeth in the front. He also has plates going down the center of his body. Some dinosaurs did have plates such as the stegosaurus(two rows of plates) or spinosaurus(had a sail). He simply looks like a dragon. He's also orange/red which is somewhat of a known dragon color. A few simple switches can change that though.
B) I don't want to offend you but I believe you did not make that. I think you stole it. LOL. Its just way too good. If you didn't steal it but were looking at pictures to get some inspiration then you should show me the source just in case its WAY too close. My site is popular and they will see it sometime and come after me.
Conclusion: Excellent. that is some high quality stuff.

Background. Nothing wrong here. Little bit of splash won't hurt. It good. Not too much, not too little. excellent.
Mascot. I smiled a bit. He's the cutest. 84% of my 60K traffic a month is children. that other funny guy on the right was the kicker. I didn't see him until after. Very impressive. Its not all perfectly professionally cool, but its just the way its suppose to be. You should be working for a newspaper because this is funny page comic style for sure. Its good. Where to improve if you'd like to. A little more blend in the color on the left guy and he will be a little more unique.
Words/text. Why does everyone do the "take the background and cut out words" Your banner is funny so the words/fonts should be a little more curvy or something different.
Banner in whole. I did notice that its a little empty in the center. Everything is pushed to one side. Acceptable? sure. Better if it was not? Yep.
Overall excellent.

Its not sat. so people who want to enter "keep em coming".

I have no clue now. You did pretty much all that I suggested to make it better. You can either leave it or use your imagination again. I don't know.

On a side note, I'm still waiting for someone to jump on my "make the font out of fossil legs" idea. That would be pretty awesome combined with a good mascot. Tough but awesome.

 

What a cheerful CH you are. I'm done with the mascot.

Alright, based on the answer of all current entries of yesterday I've changed the prize to be more fair. Instead of just 1st getting $80:
1st = $60
2nd = $20
3rd = $10
This way a lot of peoples' hard work is not for nothing. Some real good stuff here.

Words/text. I can't complain. You saw that I liked that style from the stolen mascot guy and you took advantage of that. Everything is so busy in the back that the basic font is the best way to go. there really isn't much you can do. It would be just a waste of time. Put a teeth mark on the inside of the first D? bah, its a waste of time this is a good entry.
Background. Your background is the best around for sure. You went the extra mile. I'm not sure which version I think would look better. Its perfect.
Mascot. When you showed me the draft I thought "uh oh, this guy didn't see the submissions. I looked so hand drawn. Now that you've straightened it out and modified it, sitting on the perfect title and background its much better. I think you should be happy to hold this piece of work as a final submission. There's only a few hours anyway before I choose.

Entry #2(stegosaurus):
Words/text. taking into factor that the background and mascot are very conservative The text is not too good. There's nothing special about it in any way and the slogan cannot be read clearly because the background is close to the same color.
Background. There's something going on back there but it is fairly plain. It looks like you did more in this entry than your first one but I think that cute little shadow of a little guy on the right(in the 1st submission) gave it the edge that this banner does not have. In general its much too plain.
Mascot. This is not a mascot. This is a picture of a dinosaur, but I'll let it slide because it not bad. Has multi-color, extra detailing. Not too bad. Pretty good

Entry #3(brontosaurus):
Umm, nah. the gray one is way too plain. the mascot guy is something that would be much better as a shade in the background of one of your previous entries. The color doesn't match? Blue....why blue? text, border, etc. Its all just way too plain and basic. This one is a scratch.
