There is no single correct answer to this and might depend on the product, your goals, the time and resources you have at your disposal.

for more immediate results you could use;

youtube and record a short review style video with your site link in the description.
Article directories with a short article with your site link
yahoo answers to search out people asking questions about the product if its already known or search out questions and keywords/phrases related to the product your looking to promote. Write a useful answer for the poster and suggest looking at the product your wanting to promote. Try not to make this a blatant sales pitch as your answer could get flagged as spam. always try to be helpful.
find forums related to the niche/product your looking to promote and take the same approach as yahoo answers. Start interacting with the community with your site link in your signature.

building a site and trying to get ranked for your search terms will give you (assuming the search engines like what your doing) long term results but the above methods can be done for a slight more faster result while your waiting for your ranking to increase
