Were thinking about creating a more specific URL to the keyword that we would like to rank for and redirecting that URL to our main webiste. Example: Create www.mybilgepumps.com (Has Bilge Pumps in URL to help with the Keyword) and have this redirected to our main site that does not have Bilge Pumps in the URL. Can anyone tell me what Google thinks about this and if we would be penalized for trying this. Is this a good idea? Thanks
Doing this will have no benefit on SEO whatsoever. As soon as Google reaches your .htaccess file and sees a 301 redirect, they will redirect all link juice and not even consider the domain, since 301 redirects are conventionally used to tell Google (this is our OLD site).
You can't be penalized, however you can try to rank it highly for "bilge pumps" and then use the site to provide a backlink to your main site.
YOu should try to have micro sites launching tactic, that is similar your way and I do for my clients easily. You just create such micro sites having main keywords in the URL and just create 1-2 pages website. Have unique keywords rich content there and place a banner to your main e-commerce site from your all micro sites this way your all organic traffic will reach to your main site in proper way and Google has no trouble with that. Also micro sites will rank easily with very small amount of SEO since having main keyword in the URL. .. my 2 cents
I would suggest you that if you want to use then create your website like this http://www.domain.com/keyword.html and put the relevant content and remember the keywords density
Thanks for everyones help. Andrewaff - We were debating on creating microsites to very specific products. When nameing these micro sites, would you try to find names that start with the keyword you want to rank for, example: AnchorWinchCo.com - Is that better than this - TheAnchorWinchCo.com I'm trying to find out how it effects Google with having an irrevelant word before the keyword I'm wanting. (Like the word "The" or "My") Thanks
From previous experience: ranking a keyword domain and then 301 redirecting that domain into another caused the destination domain to rank for the keyword term, even if it had nothing to do with that keyword. It's maybe a year since I tried it; right now I couldn't tell you what effect it will have but I'd say it was extremely unlikely to be a negative one. I'd recommend building some links and getting the original domain ranking before redirecting it though.
