The funda to optimize URL structure is basically depends on your link-building strategies. However, my personal recommendation is to create long tail URL (meaningful). Google will give it priority in comparison to exact match.

    domain.com/main-category/second-level-category/title-of-the-page

    Ex:
    abc.com/women/shoes/reebok/some-product-name

This way you can structure your web-page for a product site
It helps you to index all your pages easily by Google bots

Use hyphens & keyword on your pages name. mean if you want to target web design Sydney keyword then make one page for web design Sydney on your website and make url like this.abc.com/Web Design/Web-Design-Sydney but don't use lot use hyphens.

    URL should be Keyword rich
URL should match with your breadcrumb... so it should be like domainname.com/first-level-category/second-level-category/title-of-the-page
If your site doesn't have a breadcrumb then get one. Its good from SEO point of view.
Make sure the title of the page is not too long. If it is, then modify the URL and make sure it is not too long.

Ideally, URL should not have more than 3-5 words. If the URLs exceed that then Google ignores and does not give much credit to it. Short URLs gives better rankings as well as more click through.
Other things to consider are – use dashes instead of underscores to distinguish two words in the URL, minimum capital letters should be used in the URL, and many others.

I get best results when the url is simply the website name (preferably keyword rich domain) and the page url is the keyword you are trying to rank for. For example if your website is dogtraining.com, then you interior pages should read something like dogtraining.com/pitbull-obedience.html
