What is the best method to promote a site?

recently I just made a site similar to 9gag

my plan is to gather a bit of people and use the power of facebook sharing

my plan is to get to alexa ranking about 10000

but for now i found it hard to start gathering the first group of people

can anyone give me some useful suggestion about how to start a site?

what method is the best to gather the first group of people? such as forum posting ...

Use articles, facebook comments and likes, directories. combination of these will improve your site's alexa rank very quickly.

Only SEO can bring popularity for a website. Stick with the basic things start proceeding SEO. If you want to bring traffic to your website suddenly then PPC, paid advertisement is the only way, because SEO is a long process..

Forum marketing and social media marketing are always great ways to promote a site.

 

Do not reply of one method. You can get groups from Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. Also try other methods like SEO, article marketing, video sharing, etc. You can get some traffic from each of these methods. Its not advisable to reply on one method.

 

SEO sure is great like many people mentioned BUT (and this is a BIG BUT) DO NOT rely on it, you just don't know when Big G (google) decides to go on a deindexing rampage etc.

My suggestion and something I am currently working on is one of the oldest and most simple methods of promoting a website:

Guest posting & Commenting on popular blogs

Both of these go hand in hand. The key is to find popular blogs that have a lot of activity from people coming back to it (solid readers/visitors). Once you find these blogs your goal is to participate and leave real comments on the posts that are made there and by real comments I mean actually reading the post and giving your thoughts on it not just "great post I like it do more" ( this always cracks me up)

At the same time you want to find popular blogs that accept guest posting meaning you can write up a quality article and contributed to the popular blog. This is awesome because it means you get a backlink to your site and you get to put your article along with your site since its linking to it in front of readers/visitors that come to that popular blog.

In the long run this is a great method to promote a site and also build a great following of real people that will be interested in knowing more about you. So go ahead, give it a try and let me know how it goes!

1) Start working by your Onpage
2) basic directory submission - try to list in the DMoz directory and then continue with the others directories as well.
3) Article marketing is a very good resource for the visitor and for increasing the alexa.
4) Press release submission once in a while.
5) Yahoo answer is the good source for visitor - you can get a huge number of traffic from here.
6) Blog commenting and blog submission - in the recent times is a very good practice for generate backlinks and traffic.
