Mass directory submission is now pretty pointless to be honest, submitting to 1000s of directorys which have little traffic except the people/bots who are going there to submit new sites is just pointless now as the link wont really give any benifit. But large directorys that rank well in search engines for certain business types or specialised directorys and local directorys do still work.

If the directory gets relevant traffic and your listed on there then you stand a chance of getting some direct traffic off the directory site, I would also say if your site is listed on a page that ranks well and gets traffic from Google then you will still get some benifit from being listed in the directory.

So directorys still do work and they do have their place but you need to be alot more selective about which directorys you bother submitting to or your just wasting your time now.
