Joomla or Wordpress?

I hope this is the correct forum for posting this question.

    The question is:

What sites work best on Joomla and which work best on Wordpress?

If i had to buy a host + domain, and had a choice of installing Joomla or Wordpress what would you choose?

    Why?

    Thanks in advance

Depending on what you are going to develop:

    1) A Portal or Big Website : Joomla
    2) A Simple Blog : Wordpress

Wordpress is a blog. joomla has a blog and a website rolled into one. It depends on what you want like Max but there are other types of each.

    Agreed with max pain.

But just want to add that Wordpress can also be a powerful web site as well.

With more flexibilities to expand. and the most important, "Major SE still in love with blogs"....

You can also make a combination.

Add a blog on your big site. ;)

I'll just echo the above opinions... WordPress works well in a blog style, whereas Joomla is good for "full-on" sites and has blog capability too.

There are plug-ins for both WordPress and Joomla, but in my experience of Joomla there's an absolute ton of functionality that can be added via the extensions, nearly a thousand at the last count... shopping carts, search-engine friendly URL modules, galleries etc etc...

So, how complex do you want your site to be? :)

you can combine both easy together!!
This "combination" is a Wordpress Component for Joomla.
    It is called: OpenWP!

    Here are two example sites:

    Zerolight Blog

    German Internetcity/blog

You can read more about OpenWP here:
    Joomlablog

    or here

    I hope this helped?

    Wordpress - blog personal website
Joomla - extensive, complex, out-of-this-world-functions and extreme marketing capabilities. It can also be used as a personal website and a blog.

I would recommend modxcms.com over joomla ever time! I have been running a site on joomla and compared to modx joomla is just to damn difficult to extend and customize, modx on the other hand can be extended with new functionality within seconds, it has a great framework for dev and a good and dedicated community.

I have messed around with that CMS, as well as a number of others, before I arrived at Joomla. I suppose like everything else in life, people like different flavors of the same thing.

It took me quite a while of weeding through CMSs before landing at Joomla and I just wish I had been pointed there sooner. Once you learn how to use Joomla and see the wide array of extensions available - http://extensions.joomla.org - and the vast community backing it - you'll never look back.

    :D

Huh? You can do that with Wordpress as well, with the difference that using Joomla for a small blog would be just an overkill.

I think comparing them is not good because they are quite different from each other. Joomla is a full CMS whereas Wordpress is a full-featured blog.

    I agree with howardroak.
Joomla is more complex while Wordpress is more plug and play.
