    Directories are basically how people found websites before search engines became popular. They used to be amazing for SEO, but not so much anymore - although they still help.

    DMOZ and YahooDirectory are the biggest ones around.

    You will get back link through directory submission no matter its free or paid, but now a days directory submission trend is out of SEO. Better try to create natural back links through article submissions and blogs.
