Cloaking is the technique of hiding main content from the search engine spiders with an intent of boosting your website ranking. In cloaking, you present different content to the user to that of search engine. Content which is presented to the search engine is highly optimized for certain keywords... This content may contain stuffed keywords and backlinks. Legitimacy depends on intent of claoking the pages... If it is done for boosting website ranking, it is illegitimate.

That is keyword stuffing and an extreme black hat example of cloaking. It is more grey hat than anything. If you use it properly it barely is past white hat SEO. It's not necessarily main content. Google will ban/penalize you for what you describe, so in that aspect you are right. How many people are going to chime in with the same thing? And again. Not completely true. It depends on how you are implementing the cloaking. Completely wrong. Okay you take cloaking in two forms: 1) As a means of keyword stuffing your content. 2) Hiding affiliate/referral links. Obviously #1 imposes a larger risk and a larger reward. However I am going to highlight #2 a bit more. Cloaking affiliate links is not only beneficial but rather necessary in today's technology savvy market. Almost everyone understands the concept of referrals and affiliate commissions and some people will remove your snippet for this point. The most important factor is hiding the hoplink or referral URL from your initial audience. This can be done in a variety of ways but usually via a script on your site's server.
