I would buy both, but if the site is ONLY targeted to Chinese, I would choose .cn - localised domains rank MUCH better for people in that country.
Thanks for you input. I decided on .com mostly because I am familiar with them, but as I expand further overseas will definitely be moving toward country specific domains. I'm wondering if a place like china where the people are restricted is different than a foreign language European country. There could be some thrill in China with .com because the surfer is trying their English or trying to westernize or whatever.
if you are planning to invest time and make it a long term asset, I'd recommend buying them both; you'd be missing out on traffic if you didn't later on
definitely .com because it new on screen keyboard has ".com" key, but no ".cn" key. Also much more memorable and brand-able. What if later in the future you want to expand to other markets? It would be nice to have one single name
I would buy the .cn if my target market is China, for sure. If you have Chinese Americans here in the states looking at that site, then a .com would be good too but I would have redirection and translation set up on the .com site.
.com - both countries can still view it and the .com is a bit more open to cn now than it ever used to be.
I would register both because if .cn site is popular a smart marketer would make use of your traffic by getting the .com
Definitely go for the .com domain since you will want to increase your "direct" traffic and people are more accustomed to .com domains.
If i plan to start a website for only chinese then i will choose .cn only. But, if my website have other language options too then i may think of getting .com for international version of my website. However, in the 2nd case i will get both .com and .cn domains.
