Traffic is more of my concern. PR is just one small part of puzzle on how Google rank you.

I came right outta the gate with a PR6 with several sites. It doesn't depend on how much money you spend, but the type of sites linking to you. The links I was getting, you couldn't buy links there. I was getting picked up all over the place right after the launch. Then the next PR update (which was about 12 weeks later, after launch of site) the site had a PR6.

    Quality links... :)

You write them yourself and send them to the press release site.

Gives a good hit of temparary links and traffic. Most of it dies down quickly, but I've got releases that have been bringing me traffic for over 6 months :)

You can get more info at Press releases

Sorry, I can't give examples. Not with my own personal contacts or projects.

But you can check out more public displays of it, like MillionDollarHomepage.com . It happens all the time.

Not to burst your bubble, but PR does not mean jack anymore. You can get to PR 4-5 without any advertiseing what so ever. Spend maybe 30 minutes a day link building and PR 4-5 can easly be achieved.

One of my sites zoomed to PR6 within the first month, then gradually slipped to PR5 and now it is a PR4. I actually have ten times the original content then I had during its earliest days.

I guess you don't link in the right way. Probably yo have PR4 on more then one page.
If you want to concentrate PR to your homepage put a backlink to homepage on each subpage.
This will decrease PR of subpages and increase PR of main page.

And don't have too much external links, so you don't give too much your PR away (to other websites).

That may be the reason. However, it doesn't really bother me all that much as I get a lot of my writing customers from the site. Better internal linkage is something that I will have to work on.

Try to link other websites that are related to your catagory with some PR rather then just add everybody that you come across. The quality of the link is worth more then the quantity of the links.

No site should stay at "0" past one update. If it does, I would wonder if there is something inherently wrong with the structure of the site including whether introductory doors are used, automatic page forwarding included, etc.

I pretty much agree, I have had a 3 page site (no external links to it) stay 0 past the first update. But if you have at least 10 pages, just the internal links are enough to get you to a PR1 or 2 with out any external links to your site. Even a 3 page site will normally get a little PR after a couple updates.

Do you think its better to get a press release or buy a quality link?

Press releases are very often temporary and are often on low PR pages. They give a good hit of new visitors and may give a few permanent links.

They serve a different purpose then a high PR link from a high traffic related site. Which is better would be determined by your immediate goals. A Press release that is of sufficient quality to get picked up by Newspapers or High traffic sites would be of higher value.

If your release is not as important than I suppose a high quality link would probably have the most long term value.

Hard to make a good evaluation with out the details of the link and the press release. :p
