Focus on 1 niche, or numerous niche's?

Me and someone else are going to be buying from wholesalers, we are putting an initial £5k in to it, see how it goes.

We are stuck at our first hurdle.

Do we focus on one specific niche? Or do we try and dabble in a few niches?

Or do we dabble in a few niches until we find a comfort zone....

Also genuine websites where we can contact wholesalers etc, we don't mind paying.

Focus on one niche, become the master of that niche, and then you can move on.

I agree with PPCoach. I think people make big mistakes by creating a website and just assuming it's going to work out. Marketing is all about effort and if you aren't putting effort into making the website everything it could be, then that website probably won't take you very far.

With that said, know when to get out. Not every idea is a hit and just because you thought it was a great idea at the beginning doesn't mean that it is ever going to be profitable. Just keep in mind how much you realistically think it's going to take to get it going. If you get to that point and it isn't doing what you want it to do, sale it or drop it and move on. Most businesses that are failing are failing hugely because they don't know how to either A) Adjust or B) Drop it and move on to something more profitable.

If this business model is new to you then test it on one site first; two max. If you spread your approach out across numerous sites/niches you're bound to make similar mistakes on ALL of them simultaneously. Work it small, get it right, use your proof of concept to develop the model out further for other niches. Experience and gradual learning can't be bought.

I agree with PPCoach and PHPGator that you should focus on 1 niche, build that up first and then look into other niche markets. Doing SEO work can take a lot more time then many people think and over doing yourself trying to get into several niche markets at one time could become too much. You should consider purchasing domain names for the additional markets that you target so you own them when you have your first website ranking well.

I have to agree with sticking to one niche, make sure you master that niche and then you can move onto others! On the other hand though, its always good to have your 'fingers in a number of pies' as the term goes and not to focus your business ideas too narrowly

In theory 'yes' one niche would be the best option and as you have mentioned in your post you are buying from wholesalers which is fine but if for instance you choose a gardening niche your revenue would be say just 7 months of the year ie spring and summer so that may well be a case of having numerous niches. So both options could well work this all depends on what you decide to sell a few years back i had 4 sites running together these covered toys for christmas, diets till easter, gardening etc and although these did overlap sometimes they always produced revenue rather than dropping off as the season finishes.

That would depend, if you know that you can manage multiple niches, then go with it. But if not, stick with one.
