It is not written anywhere that increasing traffic can increase the PR but it can be counted as one of the factor that helps in increasing the PR of the website.

I could say "All sites that use the colour blue on their pages will get higher PR for it, and although it isn't written anywhere, you can take it from me that it is one of the factors Google considers when calculating PR" and it would mean as much.

Why should be PR, which is a measure of the importance of a website based on the sites that link back to it, be affected by traffic?

There are some things that are written about it. Look at the Wikipedia description of PR, it is quite specific and no mention of traffic:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank

But if it was a factor, where would Google get the traffic data from? It has Google Analytics, but Matt Cutts is on record as saying they do not use data from GA for ranking purposes:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLmO1GE4GvI

Also, please consider this; even if Matt Cutts is lying, what about all the sites that don't have GA? Google cannot use something for ranking purposes when it doesn't have data for every site.

One of my friends owns a website with over 20000 pages, and over 1000 visitors daily (the analytics was shown to me)
The PR of his website: 0
It is because he has not done any SEO to his website yet even after years

Which shows a site with traffic but no PR. Conversely, my own site has PR4 but low traffic - 845 unique visitors last month. Some sites have a broader appeal than others, (more traffic) but that doesn't make them better sites. I have a small target market but am selling a relatively high value product. So for me it is all about market share and converting leads, it isn't about numbers of visits. Within my niche Google has decided that my site is more "important" than my competitors because of the backlinks it has, i.e. the PR.

    Cant agree more.
Better narrow down the keywords/niche rather than competing with already-big sites
After all, the final goal is to get profit, not to be the first in Google

    That's my 2 cents

Increasing traffic won't get you a higher PR, however, typically a higher PR will get you more traffic. Try building more quality links to your site and you will achieve a higher PR. SEO takes time, don't expect results over night!

I just looked at your site and it is already PR5. Can I ask why you are so concerned to increase it further?

I think nomenclature 'PageRank' and 'page rank' are confusing. 'Page rank' is thought by some to mean the ranking or positioning of a webpage on search engine results pages. Google uses a number of user signals to determine such positioning probably including click through rate (CTR). PageRank, named for one of the two Google co-founders - Larry Page - is determined by the total value of incoming links. The value of each link is calculated as the PageRank of the page giving the link and divided by the number of outgoing links. PageRank, particularly the HomePage PageRank of the website is, IMHO, the top factor in the Google positioning algorithm. See "Domain Authority: The Top Two Factors On Google: A Study of 50,000 Webpages in 5 Countries"

PR and Traffic have NOTHING in common... By the way, traffic can only help you to increase your Alexa Ranking and make more sells from your website... Nothing else ;)

Increasing visitors doesn't affect page rank. It will however affect alexa rank. Page rank will be based on links.

Visitors can't help your site to increase its Page rank it will only help you to increase your traffic. You need quality backlinks and fresh and unique content for your site to increase your Page Rank.
